Edmund the earthworm lived in the dark. He tunneled through soil, ate decaying leaves, and never saw the sun. The other earthworms told him the surface was dangerous. "Birds," they whispered. "Feet. Poison."

But Edmund dreamed of light.

One night, after a heavy rain, he burrowed upward. The soil grew softer, cooler. He broke through into the open air.

The world was vast and dark, but above him, a thousand tiny lights flickered.

"Are you lost?" asked a cricket.

"What are those?" Edmund asked, pointing with his front segment.

"The stars," the cricket said. "They've been there forever."

Edmund stared. He had never seen anything so beautiful. "I want to touch one."

The cricket laughed. "You can't touch a star. They're too far."

Edmund returned to the soil, but he couldn't forget the stars. He tunneled toward the surface every night, watching them shift and shine.

The other earthworms called him crazy. "You'll never reach a star," they said.

"Maybe not," Edmund said. "But I can see them. That's enough."

He became the colony's storyteller, describing the stars to earthworms who had never seen the sky. They gathered around him, listening, dreaming.

One night, a meteor streaked overhead, landing in the meadow. Edmund burrowed toward it, finding a warm, glowing stone.

"This is a piece of a star," he said.

He carried the stone into the tunnels, where it lit the dark forever.

The other earthworms no longer called him crazy. They called him lucky.

But Edmund knew the truth. He had made his own luck, following his dream through the dark until he found light.

The star stone still glows in the deepest tunnel, a reminder that even earthworms can reach for the sky.

Edmund still watches the stars every night, his body resting on the cool soil, his heart full of light.

And when young earthworms ask him how to find their own dreams, he says: "Burrow up. Look around. The stars are waiting."

They always are. For those brave enough to see them.
