Edmund the earthworm lived in the dark. He tunneled through soil, ate decaying leaves, and never saw the sun. The other earthworms told him the surface was dangerous. "Birds," they whispered. "Feet. Poison."
But Edmund dreamed of light.
One night, after a heavy rain, he burrowed upward. The soil grew softer, cooler. He broke through into the open air.
The world was vast and dark, but above him, a thousand tiny lights flickered.
